Cornell’s ZBT Allegedly Made Pledges Participate In A ‘Pig Roast’ Sex Contest

Zeta Beta Tau fraternity at Cornell’s University has been placed on probation, after the University officials found out that it was having a “Pig Roast” competition among new members and pledges. According to an investigation made by the university’s Fraternity and Sorority Review Board, the participants, who were competing for points, gained their points by having sex with as many women as possible, and if there was a tie at the end of the competition, the winner would be chosen in favour of the brother who had sex with the heaviest women.

According to The Cornell Daily Sun, the review board completed its investigation last month, sanctioning the fraternity. It concluded that the contest allegedly took place in 2017, the brothers who participated were not mentioned and the duration of the run of the contest wasn’t mentioned either. The fraternity found out about the allegations in December, before the review board hearing.

The frat, Zeta Beta Tau will be on probationary recognition for two years, during which they’ll have to pass a full chapter brotherhood review by the national Zeta Beta Tau organization, as well as participate in programs like Cornell’s Sexual Assault Awareness Week. Their frat house is now required to have a live-in adviser. The fraternity has also pledged that, “through this brotherhood review process, if we identify individual brothers we find not committed to [social responsibility and integrity] they will be expelled.”

The fraternity released a statementin response to the sanctions, condemning the alleged behavior and expressing “mutual disgust along with those who feel hurt or victimized.” It went on to say that the activities described were not sanctioned by the chapter and the brothers were “not aware” they were happening, which seems strange considering they are also not outright denying them either? The fraternity says it is “shocked and appalled” by the allegations:

“We, too, are in disbelief and even moret so that these alleged actions may have been taken by those whom we called brothers.”

The statement reads:

“The Kappa Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity is horrified at the notion of the degradation and/or objectification of women, and the impact it has had on men and women across the United States, and at Cornell.”

In the statement, the fraternity writes that they plan to conduct “multiple educational programs on the topics of healthy relationships and a variety of education that will positively impact our entire brotherhood. They also plan to offer the programs to the entire Cornell community because they “intend to be a convener and leader in this type of education.”

Vice-President for student and campus life, Ryan Lombardi, said in an interview with news men:

“The campus community will be watching to see whether the members of ZBT, as individuals and as a group, live up to their public pledge to demonstrate ‘through our actions that this inexcusable behavior will not be tolerated.”
